Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
When documents are scanned into a computer the contents are usually saved as an image. This means without using OCR, any text on the original paper document couldn't be edited or saved as text.
OCR is the technology that allows the text on paper documents to be converted into text which is editable after scanning.
The character image is translated into character codes such as ASCII.
