Image Map
A web design term.
Most images appear on a page in order to convey a message or make an impact. But there is another use for pictures on a web page - namely as a navigation method.
For example imagine that the front page of a web site might have an image of a shop store, with book section, DVD section and so on. You may be able to click on the 'DVD section' part of the picture to jump to the DVD section of the web site.
This is what an Image Map does. The designer will make an invisible area on the image that becomes a hyperlink. You know this is happening because the mouse cursor changes to a small have to indicate a link.
