Hanging Indent

A formatting term.

Normally the first line of a paragraph is in line with all the others below it. But sometimes, just for the interesting way it looks, the first line is not in-line with the rest of the paragraph. In this case the line is said to be 'indented'.

A hanging indent is where the all the lines below the first one is a bit to the right like this:

hello world, it is a sunny morning 
     and this is the second line
     and this in the third line

Hanging indents are easily produced in a word processing package by changing the tab settings on the ruler.
