Data Mining
Corporations and large companies collect and store large amounts of customer data, for example supermarkets keep records of every purchase made by a customer who has a loyalty card.
'Data Mining' is the process of sifting through that data in order to find interesting patterns.
For example, the supermarket may wish to see if someone buying a DVD also goes on to buy popcorn - in which case it would be a good idea to place a popcorn stand next to the DVD shelf to improve sales.
