Data Controller

A Data Protection Act term.

The Data Controller is the person within the company that is responsible for ensuring that the Data Protection Act (1998) is followed by staff.

Before a company can collect personal data the Data Controller must apply to the Data Commissioner to obtain permission. They must specify why they want to collect the data and what they intend to do with it. If the company decides to change the use of the personal data which they have collected then the Data Controller must inform the Data Commissioner about the changes.

The Data Controller must ensure that all data users in the organisation are adhering to the eight principles laid down in the Data Protection Act.
