Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC)

An error detection and correction method.

You will find 'CRC' sections within a data packet such as an Ethernet packet.

A simple way of checking if an error has occurred within a data packet is to see if all the bits add up to an even (or odd) number. This is called 'parity checking'. This is fine, but a CRC goes further and is able to detect more than one error within a packet.

CRC makes use of complex mathematics to create a 'checksum'. This 'checksum' is used to detect and correct errors.
