Alphanumeric
Alphanumeric data can consist of a combination of number characters and letters. Its meaning is often extended to include punctuation marks and symbols such as @. # and so on.
Alphanumeric as a data type means that any numbers it contains is to be treated as just another character. For example a telephone number could be stored in an alphanumeric field.
Note: alphanumeric data does not have to contain a mixture of numbers and letters, it can also be purely text, for example, John Smith or it could be just numeric characters 0 to 9.
