2. The Fetch Cycle
The slide show below shows the steps a CPU goes through to fetch a single instruction from main memory. The fetch cycle involves four registers :
- Program Counter
- Memory Address Register
- Memory Data Register (also called the memory buffer register)
- Instruction Register
It also involves the address, data and control bus as well as main memory.
