2. Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (2000)

This Act was passed to provide a legal framework for organisations such as the security services and the police to carry out surveillance and to access electronic, postal and digital communications on individuals.  It also makes it a crime for anyone who is not authorised under the Act to carry out surveillance and monitoring of communications.

The aim of allowing certain organisations to intercept communications is to:

  • Prevent or detect crimes
  • Prevent public disorder from occurring
  • To ensure national security and the safety of the general public
  • To investigate or detect any abnormal or illegal use of telecommunication systems.
